In Japan it is quite common to visit a temple or shrine to ask for good fortune on specific life events and you will often see people write their wishes on an ‘Ema’ (絵馬), a small wooden plaque. Once inscribed with a wish, Ema are hung on special boards at the shrine where the kami (spirits or gods) are believed to receive them. They are left there until they are ritually burned at special events, symbolic of the liberation of the wish from the writer.
