When it comes to spring in Japan the blooming of the Sakura (cherry blossom) trees is the big one, everyone will come together in the local parks to spread out their blankets underneath the blossoms and celebrate the arrival of spring. There is a magical quality to the abundance of these delicate pink and white flowers and their fleetingness makes it feel extra precious. I love the magical quality of the Sakura in bloom but the Ume (plum blossoms) are my favourite. The blooming of ume trees is the first sign that spring is on its way. They may not be as abundant as the Sakura but they smell amazing! Walking through an Ume grove in spring is one of my favourite memories from Japan.
